Past Projects - The Smoroden Family 2008
The second Home Team Home Repair project in 2008 was for the Smoroden Family of Port Coquitlam.
In October 1997, Steve & Kathy were delighted with the arrival of their 3rd child, Nicolas. They knew that the roadahead for all of them would be laced with challenges, hurdles, and trials. Nicholas was born with spina bifida. He has had numerous surgeries and has to endure invasive procedures daily. Barring a medical miracle, he will always require a wheelchair. He has several more major surgeries still to be done to attempt to correct the curve to his spine. His challenges are physical ones and they definitely take a toll on his life and in his heart. In addition to Nicholas*s challenges, Kathy, his mom, also deals with multiple health challenges, which require frequent hospitalizations, home intravenous therapy, and sometimes surgery. Living with a chronic illness like Kathy does, often takes a toll on her energy level and physical stamina, which made it more difficult for her to get Nicholas up the stairs on days when she was the only one home to make this happen. As Kathy's illness has progressed, many of the responsibilities of assisting Nicholas fell on the two older children, Sarah and Zachary.Despite the struggles of living day to day in a home that was just inadequate for their needs, they rose above the challenges in so many ways. Their friends say that they have been a testimony to many of how to 'shoulder' the tough things that can come your way.It is their love for each other and their faith that things will get better that helps keep them together. The Smorodens have lived in their home in Port Coquitlam for more than 20 years.
When we were invited into the Smoroden home and witnessed Nicolas navigating himself in his enviroment we realized that no one, especially a child should have so much trouble moving around in their own home. Many things required attention and the Home Team along with many local businesses and community volunteers stepped up to the challenge and made changes to the home that make life much easier for Nicolas and his family.
When all was said and done the Smoroden family home was not only functional, but beautiful. New windows and doors as well as exterior stone, siding, trim andnew paint colors dramatically changed the curbside appeal. Inside boasted a new kitchen and bathrooms, flooring, paint and furniture. But best of all was the elevatorinstalled to help Nicolas have movement in and out of his house without the help of someone else. Kathy says that this has helped Nicolas to also take responsibililtywith his own personal care and independence, and has made a huge impact on his life.
